Tik Tok: Advice and resources for schools
11 September 2020
You may be aware of stories in the news this week about an upsetting video circulating on the social media platform TikTok.
This can be an incredibly difficult topic to cover – whether communicating with pupils and students about something they may have seen or heard about, or with parents who are worried about how to help their child stay safer online.
Of course, no school will want to alarm their family community. So while Parent Zone are not providing a piece on the specific content of this TikTok video, we have a range of expert resources that can help you address any questions or concerns:
- TikTok Parent Video Guide: A 2-minute, shareable video by Parent Zone explaining the social media platform: https://youtu.be/e0xXCg2s0YM
- TikTok Parent Handout: a 2-page downloadable PDF which explains the platform, including parental controls and privacy settings.
- A guide to acceptable behaviour online: this downloadable PDF covers 6 pieces of advice that can help children to navigate the online world, including content sharing.
- A guide to reporting on social media apps: this downloadable PDF has advice on blocking and reporting content and users on TikTok and other social media platforms.
There are more resources within a TikTok thread in the Members Forum.
