Government publishes response to Online Harms White paper
15th December 2020
The government has published its response to the consultation on their Online Harms White Paper, with an Online Harms Bill expected sometime in 2021. The response aims to set out the government’s approach to making Britain the safest place in the world to be online.
The response confirms the areas which will form part of upcoming legislation and confirms that Ofcom will become the regulatory body. Any legislation will apply to any services accessed in the UK, regardless of where they are based in the world. Whilst the response does cover many of the areas of concern raised by the UK’s online safety organisations, ParentZone have pointed out that it still does not encompass financial harms, which would cover areas such as in-game ‘gambling’ which remains unregulated in the UK.
