E-Safety in Secondary Schools

‘Terms such as E-Safety, online, communication technologies, and digital technologies refer to all fixed and mobile technologies that children may encounter, now and in the future, which allow them access to content and communications that could raise issues or pose risks to their wellbeing and safety'.

BECTA 2008

 --

In the five schools where provision for E-Safety was outstanding, all the staff, including members of the wider workforce, shared responsibility for it. Assemblies, tutorial time, personal, social, health and education lessons, and an age–appropriate curriculum for E-Safety all helped pupils to become safe and responsible users of new technologies.

Ofsted: Inspecting E-Safety (September 2012)

Safeguarding children in their use of technology is a priority for The ICT Service. To help you respond to the local and national context we offer the following:

Staff E-Safety Survey

Ofsted Section 5 Briefing for schools published in September 2013 recommended that schools ‘audit the needs of all staff and provide training to improve their knowledge of and expertise in the safe and appropriate use of new technologies’.

Use our set of questions to audit your staff. We will send you a link to an online form to pass on to your staff for them to complete within an agreed timescale. Once the results are compiled, we will send these to you to inform your future professional development plans.

Whole Staff Awareness-Raising

1.5 hours

Following the Byron Review, a great deal of information exists on how to stay safe online but professionals, parents and children are often confused by some of this information and don’t always feel confident about what they should do. A whole staff training session will provide strategic advice and guidance to:

  • review the latest findings from Ofsted
  • help staff to recognise the current climate of E-Safety
  • see how to reduce the risks
  • plan an E-Safety education programme
  • develop a whole school action plan.
This session can be adapted for schools who require refresher training or have a specific area of concern which they would like to address, such as social networking, gaming, protecting your professional reputation.

E-Safety Policy Review / Development

1.5 hours

All schools and settings need to recognise the importance of E-Safety as part of the wider safeguarding remit. Following an awareness-raising session, let us help you to review your school position on a range of E-Safety issues and develop policies and practices to ensure the responsibility for online safety is shared across the school workforce and that you have a robust set of policies in place.

Parental E-Safety Talk

1.5 hours

(A surcharge will be made for talks taking place ‘out of hours’)

A talk specifically for parents focussed on understanding the risks to children. Using supporting video material and up-to-date data, the session will also include some practical advice about how to minimise these risks and help children to stay safe in the digital world.

Additionally, we can conduct a survey with your pupils to see what they say they are doing online and report back to parents during the event. Afterwards, we will provide some links and resources for your website or school newsletter.

In-Class Awareness-Raising Experience Sessions

2 hours

Let us work with your pupils on an afternoon of collaborative tasks dealing with issues they may face in the online world.

The sessions are practical, collaborative and, where possible, will utilise online communication to manage some of the content the children will encounter.

Choose from either an activity session focussed on social networking or a session on Cyberbullying.

Each session lasts approximately 1 hour.

If you have any concerns about the adequacy of your current E-Safety arrangements, The ICT Service can help you.

We will design a support programme to meet your specific needs within a framework of the criteria identified in the Ofsted ‘Inspecting E-Safety: Briefing for Inspectors’ (September 2012).

We are happy to work with governors, staff, students or parents as the need demands.
