Data Centre Power Upgrades - Weekend Downtime Required

Following the successful shutdown of the Data Centre in Cambridge over the weekend of 13/14 May 2017 we want to remind schools that the second phase of this work will be carried out over the weekend of Saturday 27 & Sunday 28 May 2017.
As before, the entire Data Centre needs to be shutdown to complete the upgrade of the UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply).
The UPS provides back-up power should the main power supply fail, and the upgrade is an essential element in reinforcing the stability of the IT infrastructure.
Schools should expect to be without the following services for the weekend:
  • Access to the Internet from any school including externally hosted applications
  • Central Hosting: SIMS and FMS
  • Centrally Hosted Email (Email sent to accounts during this time will be delayed but will still eventually be delivered if the sender queue time is sufficient to cover the outage)
  • Cloud Backup
  • SIMS Learning Gateway
  • Remote Access
  • School based systems via Remote Access
  • Video Conferencing
  • Cloud based telephony systems
Please note IT services internal to your school will not be affected but you will not have Internet access.
The ICT Service will take systems offline before 8.00am on Saturday 27 May 2017. Contractors will complete the upgrade and then the site will be handed back for the power up to begin; and we will bring services back online again.
Although we would like this to be completed in a single day, due to the complexity of this upgrade please plan for services to be unavailable throughout the weekend.
Updates will be posted to our Twitter and Facebook feeds as we have them.
We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this required downtime may cause. This is part of a programme of works for the Data Centre to undergo essential upgrades. The council undertake this type of work every five to seven years and we only shutdown when absolutely necessary.
If you require any further information, please call The ICT Service Helpline on 0300 300 0000 or email
