Free Upgrade to Windows 10

Audience: Primary / Nursery / Special / Secondary Schools

You may recall that July 2015 saw the release of the latest operating system, Windows 10 from Microsoft.  Like any new operating system, the release of Windows 10 brought significant challenges with regards to integration to existing systems and device and application support.
Rather than jump into an unknown upgrade path with a potentially unstable operating system, The ICT Service has spent the past few months testing its stability and ensuring that Windows 10 can be supported on your network.
As you will most likely be aware, Windows 10 is available as a free upgrade until July 2016.   Whilst you might expect an upgrade to provide a smooth transition to Windows 10, testing has proved this may not always be the case as on some occasions it has left the laptop or desktop unstable.
A 'clean' installation of Windows 10 would offer the best solution.
The ICT Service has worked with a number of pilot schools to address this issue, and are now in a position to offer the following advice:
  • Schools will need to upgrade their file server setting to support any Windows 10 devices
  • Where schools have older devices, or are experiencing any issues currently, the recommendation is that a clean installation is performed at a cost of £89.00 for the  device**  This is based on our normal 'Silver' installation package. For additional devices we offer a sliding scale of costs. Please contact our sales team for further information by calling 0300 300 0000 (press 2 for sales) or email
  • If schools have recently purchased devices and would like our assistance to attempt an 'in place' upgrade within the remaining offer period, understanding its limitations and potential issues, please contact the Sales team for upgrade pricing.
Until recently, school users would have not received notification of the Windows 10 free upgrade on their devices.  This will soon change.  Microsoft has made the Get Windows 10 app available to domain joined computers.  This will mean that schools who receive their Windows updates directly from Microsoft will start to see the Windows 10 upgrade icon on the system tray of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices.
* If your school has previously purchased the upgrade service to allow your server to support Windows 8.1 devices, we are pleased to inform you that over the Christmas period, the team further upgraded your server to allow you to support Windows 10 devices also.
** Subject to a £129 image creation fee per device model.
Microsoft licensing is a complex and often confusing area, why not talk to us about your licensing arrangement and where we might be able to reduce the impact of this price increase for you, by calling 0300 300 0000 (press 2 for sales) or email
