Microsoft Academic Licensing Update

Audience: Primary / Nursery / Special / Secondary Schools

In July 2012, Microsoft harmonised its licensing bringing the UK in line with other European Countries.  This resulted in an increase in the licensing of products of between 7.5% and 33.5%.
 
Luckily for UK Academic customers, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was put in place to protect Educational institutions.  Unfortunately the MOU expired on 31 December 2015.  Microsoft is now giving its Academic customers a six-month transition period before this price increase takes effect.
 
What will this mean for you?
 
If you currently purchase licensing ad-hoc using the Select agreement, you will see price increases on Microsoft licensing from 1 July 2016.
 
If you are currently within an OVS-ES or EES agreement period, you will notice an increase in July 2016 and then again in July 2017 and will increase to the harmonised level in July 2018.
 
What can you do?
 
Unfortunately the price increase is from Microsoft and therefore all resellers will implement the same increase. Microsoft licensing is always a minefield, with each new release bringing a different set of licensing challenges. The ICT Service would welcome the opportunity to discuss your licensing requirements and advise you on alternative models if appropriate.
