Notification of Planned Works and Customer Impact

1. Potential Network Outages for short periods throughout Tuesday 29 March 2016.
On Tuesday 29 March 2016, The ICT Service will carry out an upgrade to our Enhanced Internet Filtering Service. This upgrade will introduce greater resiliency and allow us to support more customers over the coming three years in terms of bandwidth usage and growing number of users.
Whilst we will endeavour to ensure that there is as little disruption as possible, there may be short periods of disruption to services hosted by The ICT Service and the Shared Schools Internet connection throughout the course of the day.
The ICT Service offers Enhanced Internet Filtering as a chargeable service. We have recently awarded a three year contract to Lightspeed Systems for this service. During the formal RFQ process we have been able to secure preferential pricing and suitable hardware to scale up the solution as required. Our Enhanced Internet Filtering Service offers support for mobile devices, school controlled filtering profiles, granular control of policies within your school and powerful reporting.

2. Potential Network Outages planned between 10.30am and 1.30pm on Tuesday 5 April 2016.
As you may remember from previous communications, the Education Datacentre sustained intermittent connectivity during a fault with our connection on 21 December 2015.
The connectivity to the Datacentre has been designed to be fully resilient and in the event of a failure we would simply route via an alternate connection. However, during the fault in December this did not occur and services were impacted.
The ICT Service Technical Services Team with Virgin Media Business have completed a full investigation into the incident and believe a root cause has been identified.  In order to ensure we don’t suffer from a similar incident again we need to test the failover of the connectivity.
The impact of our testing may result in the potential loss of service to all Education sites.  This may mean a loss of access to the Internet or Datacentre services such as Central Hosting or email.
The Virgin Media Data Services Engineer, working alongside staff from The ICT Service, will use the time between 10.30am and 1.30pm on Tuesday 5 April 2016 to prove, step by step, that the connectivity solution works according to the documented test plan.
