Making the Best of Price Increases for Microsoft Products

Audience: Primary / Nursery / Special / Secondary Schools

In July 2012, Microsoft harmonised its licensing, bringing the UK in line with other European countries.  This resulted in an increase in the licensing of products of between 7.5% and 33.5%.

Luckily for UK academic customers, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was put in place to protect educational institutions.  Unfortunately the MOU expired on 31 December 2015.  Microsoft is now giving its academic customers a six-month transition period before price increases take effect.

What will this mean for you?

If you currently purchase licensing ad-hoc using the Select agreement, for example you pay for a licence fully upfront, then you will see price increases on Microsoft licensing from 1 July 2016 of approximately 20%.

From 1 July 2017 there will be a further 20% increase to bring academic licensing in line with non-academic establishments.

If you are currently within an OVS-ES or EES agreement period - these are subscription-based licensing - then you will notice an increase in July 2016 and then again in July 2017 and will increase to the harmonised level in July 2018.

What can you do?

Talk to us. The ICT Service would welcome the opportunity to discuss your Microsoft licensing requirements and advise you on the most cost-effective model for your school. We already have a number of customers using OVS-ES agreements or planning a move to Office 365.

Unfortunately this is a price increase from Microsoft and therefore, if you do nothing, all resellers will implement the same increase.

Please call The ICT Service Helpline on 0300 300 0000 or email support@theictservice.org.uk if you have any questions or would like to discuss your licensing arrangement.
